Sinclair Method

SINCLAIR METHOD FOR ALCOHOL PROBLEMS

Studies have shown that the opioid-blocking medication, naltrexone, can help to reduce heavy (“binge”) drinking episodes and with continued use make it easier for people to stop drinking completely if abstinence is their goal.

What’s new about the Sinclair Method is not the medication itself, since naltrexone has been around for a very long time, but the prescribed regimen for taking it.

  • For many years it was thought that naltrexone had to be taken every day in order to derive its beneficial effects on alcohol consumption, but then Dr. David Sinclair and his research team in Finland showed that naltrexone was just as effective if not more so when taken approximately one hour before taking the first drink. Dr. Brottman has seen very positive results with the patients he has treated using the Sinclair Method.

  • Especially when the medication is coupled with short-term individual counseling and/or participation in Dr. Brottman's Alcohol Moderation Group.

  • Many patients using the Sinclair Method report that they are far less likely to drink to the point of blackout and severe intoxication after taking naltrexone.
